‘A mother’s love – southern white Rhinos’

What can I say about rhinos which has not been said a million times? Well rhinos often get a bad reputation because they may be panicked into defending themselves when attacked or disturbed. My simplistic solution to that is to never disturb or attack them!!! As a result, in all of my rhino experiences in Nepal and various parts of Africa, I have never ever felt threatened by a rhino and they have often been within comfortable touching distance! Black rhino, white rhino, greater one-horned rhino have all been big fat pussies. I have even had a 'ferocious' black rhino lay down and go to sleep alongside my game drive vehicle.
Maybe it just reflects my view that mankind is not superior to other species. If you approach with true humility and empathy the creatures 'get it'.....just the same as we do.
So all of that said, this is my latest charcoal engraving of three white rhinos (a matriarchal group) which we spent some time studying and sketching in Kwa Zulu Natal last year. The 43 degree heat meant they were not feeling terribly lively and mum proved to be a comfortable head rest for the other two lazy girls.
