‘ Lazy kind of day - Kangaroo Island Koala ’
Charcoal engraving on board
45 x 32cm.
This male koala lives on Kangaroo Island at Flinders Chase National Park. Koalas were introduced to Kangaroo Island way back about 1920 as an insurance against mainland koala losses. The koalas did so well that KI now has a problem with management since koalas are not indigenous to the island and it could be argued the habitat there is not adapted to cope with these heavy browsers.
This sleepy fellow was spending his daytime as most koalas do…..sleeping without a care in the world. He swayed happily back and forth in the upper limbs of the gum tree where he lay wedged comfortably …..oblivious to all who passed beneath.
