Hippos get a hell of a lot of bad press but it’s worth noting the current research which shows just how integral to the health and diversity of riparian zones hippos really are. Their importance as river system 'engineers' maintaining channel systems and diverse islands leads to increased habitat and species diversity. Remove the hippos and you lose whole systems!........but anyway that is not what this painting is about.  It is a study of that early morning time when all is calm and the water is so satiny smooth.... gorgeous Monet colours... warm and cool, dancing in harmony.
