My favourite critter over the years is probably the Australian sealion. I have spent many days and weeks living with them in wilderness areas and have always been struck by how intelligent, tactile and playful they are, it seems if they never have bad experiences with humans they are naturally friendly and inquisitive even coming close enough to sometimes sit in your lap 🙂. My personal belief is that they are the most beautiful sealion species on Earth but sadly they are also the rarest and numbers continue to decline with a probable low of 10,000 left in the whole of Australia. It is a tragic fact of fate that their continual decline appears to be wholly due to anthropocentric reasons (no real surprise there). But what does gall me is people being aware of the decline and doing little about it. That makes me very cross indeed.
My pastel artwork is an attempt to draw people's attention in Australia to a tragedy in the making in the hope we will do something to help these gorgeous creatures. You can help by supporting Australian marine conservation society
