Sometimes we don't have to move far from home to find things that delight us with their simple beauty. In this case I only had to take my portable bird hide down to the lake at the bottom of our garden and wait for the late afternoon light. White-faced herons are very common here and I sometimes forget to notice just how beautiful they are as they hunt silently along the shallows.... placing each foot carefully and silent as a martial arts master. The frogs they eat frequently don't even suspect they are being stalked and the lightning-fast strike is faster than my eye can follow. Working in soft pastel allowed me to take full advantage of its potential for delicate blending to recreate the softness of the water and the warmth of the late light.
