‘The career of a wildlife and conservation artist takes me to many unexpected and often exotic places around the planet. I am always learning about nature but above all over the last 40 years I have learned that wildlife usually does not do the expected. In fact, when one goes into nature it is best to leave expectations at home and just be completely open to what nature chooses to share with you. People often ask me if a certain field trip maybe to Africa or China lived up to my expectation and I say "No it didn't.... because I didn't have any expectations!".
In the case of this pastel artwork the yellow spoonbills certainly dented any expectations I may have had by simply turning up on the lake at the bottom of our garden. It just so happened I had a commission to paint yellow spoonbills feeding and here they were.... 50 metres from my studio window!! Nature is the gift that keeps on giving and never disappoints so long as you enjoy it on her terms. Leave the human ego at home and go into nature....as a friend recently put it 'Go get gloriously lost for a few hours'.... you never know what you might find
