When I consider that echidna relatives predate the extinction event that took out dinosaurs I get and increased sense of just how resilient and how clever these little guys truly are. Their origins go back 70 million years and it appears that when the meteor exploded into the Earth out echidna may have just pulled her head in and buried herself to wait while the planet settled down again (minus dinosaurs). One of only three egg laying mammals on the planet she is truly a remarkable piece of biological adaptation and her continued survival is testament to that.
