This leopard is from South Africa and a field trip I undertook two years back. Seems to me that at the tail end of the day a leopard's coat takes on its most beautiful hues from the late afternoon sky and lowering sun. Truly among the most beautiful of big cats his quiet strength is evident in the rippling shoulder muscles and powerful legs. My big challenge with this painting was to delicately balance the cool reflected shadow colours with the direct warmth of the late sunlight. I hope it worked.
